Synopsis

Act I

Leporello stands watch, lamenting, while his master, Don Giovanni, seduces Donna Anna. Suddenly, the two leave the house, the young woman chasing Giovanni, desperate to catch him. Her father, the Commander, appears and challenges Don Giovanni to a duel. In self-defense, he fatally wounds him. Donna Anna asks Don Ottavio to swear that he will avenge his father's death. The two are engaged, promised to a marriage of convenience, which was arranged by their parents, important members of high society in power. Between young people there is no love at all, only frustration and hatred. Although under the pressure of the recent tragic event, Don Giovanni feels the "fragrance of a woman". The woman is none other than Donna Elvira, who declares herself to be his abandoned wife. Recognizing her, he loses interest and lets Leporello explain "everything" to him. He reveals to her the impressive catalog of his master's female conquests.

Zerlina and Masetto celebrate their marriage. Don Giovanni joins the wedding, being interested in the young bride, but Donna Elvira interrupts the seduction scene just in time. In the presence of Don Ottavio, Donna Anna asks Giovanni to promise them friendly help, but just then Donna Elvira reappears, again confusing the plans and creating confusion. Donna Anna tells her fiancé that she recognized the voice of her father's killer, so she asks him to kill Giovanni.

Don Giovanni throws a mega-party, where Anna, Elvira and Ottavio appear in disguise. Giovanni finds Zerlina and tries to take advantage of her. The three mysterious guests reveal themselves and expose Giovanni as a seducer and murderer. He is cornered by everyone, but manages to escape.

Act II

Leporello, disguised as Giovanni (forced by the latter), goes on a night walk with Elvira so that Giovanni can serenade her very young maid. Masetto appears with a group of thugs, determined to kill the "harlot", but ends up getting beaten up himself, through the cunning of the fake Leporello (the real Giovanni). Leporello, still in disguise, tries to run away from Donna Elvira, but is cornered by Donna Anna, Don Ottavio, Zerlina and Masetto. Threatened with death, he exposes himself. Don Ottavio once again states his belief that Giovanni is guilty and will be punished. Elvira, crazy with love, is more and more desperate. Don Giovanni and Leporello meet by chance in the cemetery. Don Giovanni defies the place and charges trivia. A voice from deep within is heard. Giovanni sees the statue of the Commander and orders Leporello to invite him to dinner. The statue accepts.

Don Ottavio pressures his fiancée to hasten the marriage, but Donna Anna prefers to postpone it. Giovanni greedily enjoys a hearty dinner. Elvira makes one last attempt to save him, which he rebuffs. The Commander shows up and gives him one last chance to straighten up. The denouement follows.
