Synopsis
Prolog
Don Quixote's house in Castile. Don Quixote, an elderly nobleman, daydreams of a life full of heroic deeds and the beautiful Dulcinea. To fulfill these dreams, he plans a trip in search of fabulous adventures. For this purpose he takes with him the trusted servant, Sancho Panza.
Act I
A square in Seville. Several townspeople gathered in front of Lorenzo's inn. Lorenzo's daughter, Kitri, stands out from the crowd. She can't wait to meet her boyfriend, the barber Basil. He sees her and, to tease her, courts her friends, then dances with her. Lorenzo doesn't like their love and separates them. Enter Camacho, a rich but ridiculous and arrogant nobleman who tries to win Kitri's heart. Lorenzo is in the ninth heaven: here is an ideal suitor! But Kitri is not happy with the idea and makes fun of Camacho.
On their way to the bullring, a group of bullfighters stop in the square, led by the Espada and the dancer Mercedes. The general joy is interrupted by the arrival of the strange couple of adventurers Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. They stop at Lorenzo's inn. Meanwhile, Kitri and Basil return to the square, and Don Quixote is instantly charmed by Kitri's beauty. Finally he found his personification of Dulcinea.
In order to be together, against his father's will, Kitri decides to run away with Basil. They are followed by Lorenzo, Camacho's lover, to whom Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are added.
Act II
Kitri and Basil wander through a gypsy camp near a windmill. The gypsies offered them shelter and hid them from Lorenzo and Camacho. Soon, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza appear in the camp, tired of the chase. Don Quixote meets Kitri again and decides to do a brave deed to win her heart. Thus, he fights the windmill that he thinks is a giant. Thrown by the arms of the mill, he falls and injures himself, then falls asleep. In his dream he is wounded by Cupid's arrow and thinks that he will finally meet Dulcinea. Don Quixote wakes up when Lorenzo and Camacho, angry, approach the mill, looking for Kitri and Basil. But they had left the camp. Don Quixote, now trying to protect Kitri from the pursuers, deceives Lorenzo, but Sancho Panza, unwittingly shows him the direction in which the lovers fled. The only solution now, to help Kitri, is for Don Quixote and Sancho to catch up with them and warn them.
Act III
A crowd gathered in an inn for a party. After the bullfight that day, the bullfighters enter, with Espado and Mercedes in the lead. They dance to the delight of the revelers. Kitri and Basil arrive in a hurry, trying to hide from Lorenzo and Camacho. But they are seen by the followers. Lorenzo doesn't even want to hear Kitri's pleas and wants to make the engagement between her and Camacho on the spot. Basil, desperate, pretends to kill himself. Don Quixote also arrives at the inn. At Kitri's request, he convinces Lorenzo to grant Basil's last wish and give the lovers their father's blessing. Believing that Basil is dead, Lorenzo accepts, but the next second, Basil stands up limply and unharmed. Lorenzo realizes he's been tricked, but it's too late. Kitri, who knew about Basil's plan to trick them, is happy that the wife succeeded.
Act IV
Now, nothing can stand against Kitri's marriage to Basil. Among the guests of honor at the wedding is of course Don Quixote, who wishes the young people happiness, then sets off on a new adventure in search of Dulcinea.
