Opera in five acts by Charles Gounod
Libretto: Jules Barbier and Michel Carré after Faust by JW Goethe

Synopsis

Act I

In his office, Dr. Faust laments his impotence at the brink of old age, finally deciding to end his life. A song from outside stops him. Faust, with magical formulas, invokes the devil. Mephisto appears and in exchange for his soul, imbues him with a new youth. Seeing him hesitate, she shows him the face of a beautiful girl. Convinced by this apparition, Faust accepts the pact he signs with blood, and, having become young again, leaves for new adventures.

Act II

During a kermesa, the young officer Valentin is withdrawn, sadly thinking that once he goes to war, he will leave his sister, Margareta, whom he wants to entrust to his younger friend, Siebel.
Mephisto appears making grim predictions: Wagner will die in battle, Siebel will no longer be able to touch a flower without it wilting, and Valentin will be killed by an acquaintance. The youths drive him away with the sign of the cross. Faust meets Margaret and offers her his company. The girl refuses him, but Mephisto assures Faust that soon things will change.

Act III

In Margaret's garden, Siebel manages to save the flowers he picked by sprinkling them with holy water. After Siebel leaves, Faust and Mephisto arrive, placing a box of jewels next to the flowers. Margaret will discover them, letting herself be conquered by their brilliance. Mephisto and Faust reappear, the former courting old Martha, Margaret's companion, and Faust confessing his love to Margaret. Left alone at night, Margaret evokes the image of Faust. The young man, who was listening to her from the shadows, enters the girl's house.

Act IV

In the church, Margaret prays to be forgiven for sinning with Faust, with whom she is expecting a child. Mephisto, hidden behind a column, threatens her with eternal punishment. Meanwhile, Valentine returns from the war to find Mephisto outside his house, singing a sarcastic serenade. Learning that his sister has been seduced, he challenges Faust to a duel and is killed. He dies cursing his sister.

Act V

Mephisto leads Faust to his castle, where a fantastic celebration (Walpurgie's Night) is taking place. But Faust no longer feels any joy, he thinks of the unfortunate Margaret who, losing her reason, killed her child. In prison, Margaret awaits trial, but Faust appears, begging her to run away with him. In her delirium, Margareta still finds the strength to refuse him. Invoking heaven, she dies. Her soul soars to heaven while Faustus, kneeling, prays.
