Act I

Paris, Christmas Eve. From the window of the attic where he lives, the poet Rodolfo looks thoughtfully at the roofs of snowy Paris, while Marcello, his friend, paints. Chilled, Rodolfo decides to burn the manuscript he was working on in order to keep the fire burning in the fireplace. The philosopher Colline, the friend of the two, arrives. Soon the musician Schaunard appears, bringing a basket of food, wine and wood for the fire, telling his friends about the ruse by which he managed to obtain a sum of money from a rich Englishman.

The four friends decide to hang out at the Momus cafe in the Latin Quarter. The departure is delayed because of Benoit, the landlord, who has come to collect the rent. Trying to divert his mind from money, the young men offer him drinks and challenge the old man to talk about his love affairs. Then, pretending to be indignant at the owner's frivolity, they chase him away, this time also escaping the payment of the rent. The young men leave, leaving Rodolfo behind. He stays in the attic for a while, to finish an article for the newspaper he was working for.

A timid knock on the door interrupts him. It is Mimì, his neighbor, whose candle has been extinguished. She asks Rodolfo for permission to light her candle in the fireplace. The girl feels sick and starts coughing. Rodolfo, attentive, helps her, accompanying her to the door. Mimì remembers that she forgot the key and returns. The candle goes out again, because of the current. In the dark, their hands meet and thus an idyll is born.
With a spontaneous impulse, the two decide to go together to the cafe where the other friends were waiting for Rodolfo.

Act II

The streets of the Latin Quarter in Paris are lively. From a street vendor, Rodolfo buys his girlfriend a pink bonnet. Rodolfo introduces Mimì to his three friends, who greet her sympathetically. Marcello is overwhelmed by sadness, being disappointed in love.
They all sit around a table at the Momus cafe. Musetta, the ex-girlfriend of the painter Marcello, enters the restaurant. Dressed in expensive and elegant clothes, she leans on the arm of a grumpy but rich old man named Alcindoro. The two sit at a table next to that of the young people. Musetta still loves Marcello. The painter is also strongly disturbed by this meeting. In order to attract his attention, Musetta begins to sing a song that emphasizes her grace and coquetry, hoping to attract the attention of her former lover. Marcello is increasingly agitated. Feigning a sore foot, Musetta sends Alcindoro to buy him another pair of shoes. Then, without any hesitation, she threw herself into Marcello's arms. Cheerful, the young people leave the cafe, because they realize that the money that Schaunard had is not enough to pay the bill.
Alcindoro returns with a new pair of shoes for Musetta, but all he finds is the bill of payment for the buns.

Act III

End of February. The snow covered the whole city. Marcello and Musetta live in an inn on the outskirts of Paris. Mimì, suffering from a cough, comes to Marcello and tells him about the misunderstandings that arose between her and Rodolfo. Rodolfo appears, who had spent the night at the inn. Mimì hides so as not to be seen by him. In the conversation with Marcello, Rodolfo reveals the real reason for his separation from his lover: Mimì suffers from tuberculosis, death is waiting for her and she should save herself by finding a rich protector.
Shaken by what she heard, betrayed by a cough, Mimì approached Rodolfo, trying to say goodbye. Their love is as strong and sincere as in the first moment. The two postpone the separation until the spring. Mimì leaves Rodolfo, as a souvenir, the pink bonnet.
Meanwhile, Marcello and Musetta carry out their usual schedule of daily arguments. A final argument ends with a final separation.

Act IV

Alone again in their small attic, Rodolfo and Marcello think about their former lovers, Mimì and Musetta. Colline and Schaunard arrive who have not found anything to do. Making fun of the trouble, the four young men try to forget their shortcomings. Musetta appears, who tells them that Mimi, after breaking up with Rodolfo, came under the protection of a rich nobleman, but, unable to forget Rodolfo, left him. She is now on the ground floor of the building where the young people also live, seriously ill and too weak to climb the stairs by herself. Rodolfo rushes downstairs. Musetta tells how, in love, Mimì wanted to see her lover for the last time, because she feels her end is near. Exhausted from the effort, Mimì collapses on a bed. Musetta entrusts Marcello with her earrings so that he can buy her medicine and call a doctor. Colline also sacrifices his coat, which he sells to help his friend. Rodolfo and Mimì remember the happy moments. The little pink bonnet is under the poor girl's pillow. Musetta buys the patient a warm sleeve that she has wanted for a long time. After an acute bout of coughing, but with a happy smile on her face, next to Rodolfo, Mimì closes her eyes forever.
