Synopsis

Act I

In front of the king and the nobles of Brabant, Telramund, instigated by his wife, Ortrud, accuses Elsa of killing her brother. Indeed, he has disappeared without a trace, and Telramund demands that Elsa be punished, claiming the ducal succession for himself. Elsa refuses to defend herself, evoking a dream in which a knight appeared to her who will come to exonerate her. The king decides that Elsa's innocence will be proven by that noble who, fighting Telramund, will defeat him. The calls ring three times. After the last signal, a mysterious knight appears who, without revealing his identity, asks for Elsa's hand in exchange for victory. Telramund is defeated, and the knight spares him to give him a chance to repent.

Act II

The knight's only condition to his wife had been that she not seek to find out his identity. Or, this is exactly what Ortrud and Telramund are planning now, relying on the mistrust that could creep into Elsa's soul. They ask for her forgiveness, insinuate themselves and suggest her fear of her future husband. Without suspecting anything, the knight leads her to the altar. Ortrud and Telramund accuse him, in front of everyone, of using charms, asking him to say his name. The knight replies that he will only do so at Elsa's request.

Act III

In the bridal chamber, Elsa experiences the doubt slipped by the two intriguers. In vain the knight seeks to divert his thought. Bursting into the room, Telramund wants to kill him, but is immobilized. The knight replies to his wife that he will tell his name, but in front of all the assistance, after which he will leave her.

In the same place of judgment, the king and the nobles listen to the words of the knight. He is an envoy of the order of the Holy Grail on Montsalvat, his name is Lohengrin and he is the son of King Parsifal. Elsa frantically tries to stop him, but it's too late. As the heartbroken Lohengrin walks away, Elsa passes out in the arms of her brother, who has come for Lohengrin.

Synopsis

Act I

In front of the king and nobles of Brabant, Telramund, instigated by his wife, Ortrud, accuses Elsa of having killed her brother. The latter has, indeed, disappeared without any trace and Telramund demands that Elsa be punished, claiming for himself the succession to dukedom. Elsa refuses to defend herself, evoking a dream of a knight who will come and exonerate her. The king decides that Elsa's innocence will be proven by that knight who will defeat Telramund in fight. The challenge is blared three times by the trumpeters. After the final whistle, a mysterious knight appears, but he does not introduce himself to the audience. In exchange for the victory he asks for Elsa's hand. Telramund is defeated, and the knight spares his life, leaving him in remorse.

Act II

The victorious knight has a strict condition which his wife should observe: never try to find out her husband's name. This is exactly what Ortrud and Telramund plot to do, relying on the suspicion they could sow in Elsa's mind. The two beg for forgiveness but insinuate themselves closer to Elsa and make her fear her husband-to-be. Without having any suspicion, the knight leads Elsa to the altar. Ortrud and Telramund openly accuse him of having used sorcery and summon him to tell his name. The night answers that he would do that only at his wife's request.

Act III

In the bridal chamber, Elsa vividly lives her mistrust sown by the two schemers. The knight vainly strives to divert Elsa's thoughts. Bursting into the bridal chamber, Telramund wants to kill the bridegroom, but he is immobilized. The knight tells his wife that he will make his name known in front of the whole assembly and then he will leave her forever.

In the same place of judgment, the king and the nobles hear the words of the knight. He is a messenger of the Holy Grail order from Montsalvat, his name is Lohengrin and he is the son of King Parsifal. Elsa frightened tries to stop him, but it is too late. As Lohengrin, heavy hearted, walks away, Elsa collapses into her brother's arms, appearing at Lohengrin's call.
