LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR
by Gaetano Donizetti
libretto by Salvadore Cammarano
based on Walter Scott's novel "The Bride of Lammermoor"

Synopsis

When the curtain rises we discover a training room, where the soldiers do exercises, preparing for battle. Two camps are in conflict. Enrico learns that his sister, Lucia, is in love with Edgardo, his family's mortal enemy. The political and economic situation is of great crisis, the troops need money and, to get it, Enrico sees only one solution: Lucia's marriage to the tycoon Arturo.

Waiting for the secret meeting with Edgardo, Lucia recounts an ominous dream to Alisa, her companion, but rejects the premonition, convinced that love will triumph. The lovers get engaged in an impromptu ceremony, before Edgardo leaves for the mission, remaining firm in his decision to continue the revenge action against the family.

With no news from her lover, his letters being intercepted, Lucia is convinced that she has been abandoned. Like a manipulated doll, Lucia is forced to submit to her brother's will.

The wedding takes place, but at the moment when Enrico forces his signature on the marriage contract, in the presence of the priest Raimondo and the choir gathered in the celebration procession, Edgardo appears, as if out of the blue. He accuses Lucia of treason, humiliates her and breaks the engagement, cursing her.

The wedding night parties are in full swing, while Lucia sees herself not only abandoned by the one she loves, but treated as a simple object for selfish, political and military interests. On the verge of being raped by the rich groom, desperate and vulnerable, she has no other means of defending herself than murder. Raimondo stops the night's merriment and announces that Lucia has killed her husband.

Once freed from all pressures, Lucia sings one of the most sensitive and long arias in the history of the opera, that of "madness".

In the last scene, Edgardo returns angry and pained, falsely believing that Lucia is spending the wedding night in her husband's arms. The death knell rings. Raimondo informs him that Lucia is now in heaven. Upon learning the truth, Edgardo kills himself, convinced that he will meet her there again.
