Synopsis
Act I
In Nagasaki, in a house on a hill, the marriage of the Japanese Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly) to the American officer Pinkerton is celebrated. Consul Sharpless points out that the young bride is serious about marriage, which to Pinkerton is just fun. Indeed, when her relatives disown her for this connection, the young woman finds in Pinkerton's love a consolation that does not resemble mere play.
Act II
Three years of waiting have passed, but Butterfly still hopes that Pinkerton will return, raising her son and refusing any proposal to remarry. She trusts the oath of love and does not understand the advice of the United States consul, who is tasked with announcing the return of Pinkerton, remarried, to take only his son.
Act III
After a night of vigilance, Butterfly falls asleep at dawn. At the sound of the ship's port call, Butterfly prepares to welcome her husband. Pinkerton arrives with the Consul and Kate, his American wife, and tells chambermaid Suzuki the purpose of their visit. Suzuki realizes that the end of the young mistress has come. Butterfly takes the news bravely, but demands that Pinkerton come and get her baby. While the little boy waits for his father, Butterfly kills herself, hearing her name called for the last time by Pinkerton, who is running up the hill.
