Synopsis
Act I
In the castle near Seville of Count Almaviva, Figaro, the count's valet, measures the room in which he will live after the wedding with Susanna, his fiancée. Susanna reveals her master's amorous intentions to her fiance, who insistently follows her from the apartment next to their room. Figaro decides to prevent his master from touching his lover.
Doctor Bartolo and Marcellina, arrived from Seville, come to ask Figaro back for the borrowed money, following the promise to marry her. Seeing Susanna, Cherubino - the teenager always in love - wants to seize the moment to conquer her, but the unexpected arrival of the count causes him to hide. From the hiding place, he hears the count's vain pleas to get a date from Susanna. The appearance of Don Basilio forces the count to hide, while Cherubino is protected by Susanna.
The advice that Don Basilio gives to Susanna, urging her to accept the count, but also what he tells her about the love of the page Cherubino for the countess, bring Almaviva out of hiding, who, discovering Cherubino, threatens him with banishment .
Figaro's entrance postpones the count's revenge for a while. Figaro wants to get his approval for the marriage. The count postpones the answer and, to avoid scandal, appoints Cherubino an officer in his regiment, ordering him to leave for Seville as soon as possible.
Act II
Alone in her room, the countess is overcome with sadness, thinking about her husband's indifference. Susanna tells him about the count's attempts to conquer her, thus accentuating his sadness. Figaro reveals his plan to force the count to consent to his marriage with Susanna. For this, he sends the count, through Basilio, an anonymous note, informing him of a love encounter with the countess. Susanna also sends word to the count that she is waiting for him in the garden. Cherubino also arrives disguised in Susanna's clothes. The count's entrance, however, makes him run into the next room.
Despite the countess's refusal, Almaviva manages to enter the room where Cherubino was hiding, but finds Susanna, who in the meantime had taken the page's place. The women convince the count that they wanted to play a prank on him to cure him of jealousy, and he asks for forgiveness.
Figaro arrives with the gardener Antonio, who complains that a pot of flowers was broken, suspecting Cherubino for this. Figaro tells them that he is the culprit, but the gardener shows them the officer's license that the page had lost. Marcellina, Bartolo and Basilio arrive, looking for Figaro to force him to honor his commitment: the money back or the marriage. The count intervenes and announces that he will judge this case.
Act III
Agitated, the count meditates on everything that had happened until then. The countess and Susanna set up the nocturnal meeting in the garden, to which, however, instead of Susanna, the countess will go. Rosina walks away, and Susanna assures the count that the meeting in the garden will take place, as they agreed.
When Figaro appears, Susanna whispers to her fiancé that the trial with Marcellina is as if won. However, these words are heard by the count, who, realizing that a prank is being prepared for him, decides, as revenge, to prevent his valet from marrying Susanna at all costs. Don Basilio informs Figaro of what has been decided: Figaro will pay the sum owed or take Marcellina as his wife. Figaro claims that, being of noble origin, he cannot conclude a marriage without the consent of his parents. In his attempt to give details about the circumstances in which he was kidnapped by a small child from his parents, Dr. Bartolo and Marcellina recognize him as their illegitimate son and thus Figaro is saved. The two weddings are decided, Bartolo's with Marcellina and Figaro's with Susanna.
The countess dictates to Susanna a letter addressed to the count, through which the maid determines the meeting place. They close the letter with a pin intended to be returned to Susanna if the count accepts the invitation.
Barbarina, the daughter of the gardener Antonio, and Cherubino, disguised as a woman, also approach. Antonio recognizes the page, and the count threatens him that he will be severely punished. Barbarina's intervention saves Cherubino from punishment. The sounds of a march and the appearance of the two couples (Bartolo – Marcellina and Figaro – Susanna) announce the beginning of the wedding ceremonies. During the dance, Susanna slips the ticket to the Count.
Act IV
Barbarina lost the pin with which the maid's ticket was sealed and now she is looking for it. Meeting Figaro and his mother, Marcellina, she tells them everything, so that Figaro's suspicion about Susanna's infidelity seems to be well founded. He angrily leaves to catch her with her alleged lover. Figaro hides, waiting. Accompanied by Marcellina, the Countess and Susanna arrive, having changed their dresses.
Cherubino also comes to the garden and, seeing the Countess in Susanna's dress, mistakes her for the chambermaid and wants to kiss her. Meeting with what he thinks is Susanna, the count confesses his ardent love to his wife. The scene is interrupted by the arrival of Figaro who, wanting to take revenge on the Count, declares his love for Susanna, whom he mistakes for the Countess. Susanna slaps him, but Figaro calms her down, telling her that he recognized her from the beginning but wanted to make the Count jealous.
He, returning to look for Susanna, surprises Figaro and his supposed wife together. In the light of the torches, the whole confusion is clarified, and the count asks for everyone's forgiveness.
