Opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini

Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa

after the drama "La Tosca" by Victorien Sardou

Act I

In the church of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome, the painter Mario Cavaradossi works on a portrait of Mary Magdalene, using the face of the Marquise Attavanti as a model. Former consul Angelotti, brother of the marquise, escaped from the prison of Castel Sant'Angelo, seeks refuge here. Recognizing him, the painter offers to help him not to fall into the hands of his pursuers. From outside, the voice of Floria Tosca, famous singer and Mario's girlfriend, is heard, who comes to visit him. Cavaradossi hides Angelotti, making his food basket available to him.

Tosca comes to church, happy to be reunited with her lover. However, his eyes stop on the painting Mario is working on and he cannot control his jealousy towards the one who served as the painter's model. He eventually reconciles her and walks her to the exit, promising to wait for her at the theater after the show is over. A cannon is heard announcing Angelotti's escape. Mario realizes that he needs to hide the stalker and makes the decision to shelter him nearby. The two leave.

The police chief, Baron Scarpia, the tyrant of Rome, sets out in search of Angelotti. He arrives at the church, where he learns that Mario Cavaradossi works, a character suspected of revolutionary ideas. Scarpia recognizes the Marquise Attavanti's features in Magdalena's face and discovers the basket emptied of provisions. Scarpia immediately understands that the escapee has passed by and that Mario could be his accomplice. Tosca returns, but instead of meeting Mario, she finds Scarpia. He, using a fan left in the church by the Marquise Attavanti, arouses and exploits Tosca's jealousy, planning to use her for the discovery of Angelotti.

Scarpia assists at Te Deum- which celebrates the alleged defeat of Napoleon at Marenga.

Act II

In his residence in the Farnese Palace, Scarpia makes plans to conquer the beautiful Tosca, for whom he has a strong passion. Although they did not find Angelotti in the painter's house, Scarpia's men still arrest Mario and bring him in for questioning. Mario refuses to admit that he helped the escapee. To make him divulge the secret of Angelotti's hiding place, Scarpia orders the painter to be tortured. At the same time, he sends a man to call Tosca.

Floria arrives in Scarpia's office. He knows that she loves Cavarossi, and by forcing her to witness the painter's mutilation, he finally makes her divulge Angelotti's hiding place. Gladly, Scarpia stops the tortures. Cavaradossi is brought into the office to hear Scarpia order the police to look for Angelotti in the place indicated by Tosca.

The painter realizes that Floria had betrayed the secret. At this very moment news arrives that the government army has been defeated by Napoleon at Marengo. Fired by this news, the painter forgets his torments and sings a revolutionary song of the Italian patriots. In this way, however, he destroys any possibility of escaping from the hands of the tyrant. Scarpia sentences him to death, ordering that he be executed before sunrise.

The odious tyrant does not hesitate to take advantage of the misfortune he has caused: he detains Tosca and tells her that he will release the painter if she yields to his wishes. Without sacrificing herself to save her lover, Tosca pretends to agree, obtaining the promise that Cavaradossi's execution will be rigged, and is given a free pass across the border with her lover. When Scarpia tries to take his reward, Floria kills him by plunging a dagger into his heart.

Act III

In the prison of Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Cavaradossi obtains the jailer's permission to write his beloved a few lines saying goodbye to life and his love.

Tosca arrives. She shows Mario her pass and tells him about her ordeal. The two happily dream of the freedom that awaits them far from Rome. Dawn is breaking, the moment of execution has arrived. Mario walks quietly in front of the platoon, knowing from Floria that the execution will only be staged. The platoon fires the first salvo. Mario falls. Tosca eagerly waits for the soldiers to leave and approaches Mario's body, but her lover is dead! Scarpia had lied. The execution was real. Crushed by this unexpected stroke of fate, everything around Floria crumbles and Tosca collapses breathlessly.
