SYNOPSIS

Set in cosmopolitan Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, the embassy of the fictional state of Pontevedro tries to avoid a major financial crisis. At the center of attention is the beautiful and wealthy widow Hanna Glawari, whose fortune is vital for the survival of her country. Hanna, who became a widow after the death of a wealthy banker, is now one of the most sought-after women in high Parisian society. The ambassador of Pontevedro, Baron Zeta, has one goal: to prevent her from marrying a foreigner, as her wealth would then leave the country. We meet Count Danilo, a charming diplomat with a reputation as a party-goer who frequently visits the famous cabaret Maxim.

In the past, Danilo and Hanna shared a romance, but pride and life circumstances tore them apart. Now, he is sent to win her over, yet he stubbornly refuses to propose marriage for money, despite still having feelings for her. Against the backdrop of elegant balls, Hanna, aware of the true intentions of her suitors, Viscount Cascada and Raoul de St. Brioche, challenges Danilo with seductive games. Thus, the intrigue becomes even more tangled in the Parisian salon, where flirtations and plots, innocent lies and hidden truths create truly perilous connections. Among these adventures is Zeta’s wife, the beautiful Valencienne, who is also involved in a romantic story, secretly flirting with the young Frenchman Camille de Rosillon. The situation complicates for the two as Camille attempts to win Valencienne over, and they come close to being discovered, generating both comedic and tense moments. The climax comes when Hanna, wise and full of humor, reveals that if she were to remarry, she would lose her fortune.

Danilo finally overcomes his pride and confesses his love, proposing to her without being influenced by money. The operetta’s ending thus brings an essential revelation: Hanna’s true joy does not come from her wealth, but from the sincere love she finds alongside Danilo.
